Senate Backs Amendment to Give Judges More Years on the Bench

A constitutional amendment that would let judges remain on the bench until the age of 75, five years more than currently allowed, cleared the full Senate Tuesday.

SJR 408 would change a 39-year-old provision in Floridas Constitution that requires judges to retire once they turn 70.

An amendment was added to the resolution on Tuesday that would allow judges older than 75 to serve temporary assignments or to complete a term.

Still, to get on the November ballot, the companion effort, HJR 345, must be approved by the House, where no committee has discussed the joint resolution.
