Sen. Mike Haridopolos Joins Cannon, Opens Up Crist Vetoes for Overrides
In tandem with House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, opened the door Monday for bills that were vetoed by former Gov. Charlie Crist in 2010 to be passed into law via legislative overrides.
The House and Senate already passed 10 overrides of Crist vetoes during a special legislative session in November, two weeks after Republicans gained a veto-proof supermajority in both chambers.
Here is the letter Haridopolos sent to his fellow senators:
Members,
Pursuant to Article III, Section 8 of the Constitution of the state of Florida, bills from the 2010 regular session that were vetoed by the governor are available for override by the Legislature until the end of the 2011 regular session. Earlier today, the speaker of the House of Representatives issued a memorandum to members to request that they review the bills remaining for possible override and make recommendations on which bills should be considered. Over the past few weeks, several members of the Senate have also expressed an interest in considering some of the remaining vetoed bills, and it is my desire to be open and inclusive in considering these requests.
Please review the list below, which includes veto messages currently in the possession of the House and Senate. If there are any bills on the list below that you would like to recommend for consideration, please meet with Majority Leader Gardiner or Minority Leader Rich. Based on your feedback, we will develop a list of bills to be considered by the Senate for possible override.
Any questions on the process of overriding vetoes should be directed to Rules Committee Chairman John Thrasher.
