Sen. Alan Hays Highlights Legislation Reining in State Insurer

Citizens Property Insurance, the state-run insurance company, will not be allowed to issue policies for new construction in environmentally sensitive or coastal areas if a bill sponsored by Sen. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla, makes it into law.

Hays said he wants to move Citizens back to an insurer of last resort and make it more actuarially sound and on a more level playing field with the private insurance market.

Earlier this week, I introduced legislation that would return Citizens Property Insurance Corp. to its intended role as an insurer of last resort.These provisions are an additional step in the process to better protect my constituents and all Floridians from the consequences of an unstable property insurance market. It is the responsibility of the Florida Legislature to reduce the states hurricane risk and the first step to doing that is by reforming Citizens," Hays said.
