See Video of Occupy Tallahassee Being Barred From Senate Gallery

A group of Occupiers wasn't allowed to enter the Senate gallery for the afternoon session as the 2012 legislative session got under way Tuesday.

Members of Occupy Tallahassee and the Awake the State effort said they were told they were considered disruptive in trying to get into the House gallery for Gov. Rick Scotts State of the State address, which was limited to invitation-only seating.

Later, when they went to the Senate chambers in the afternoon, they were blocked from entry. They say they were told large groups had to reserve space; others said they were selectively prohibited from entering because of their appearance.

Not every member of the movement was kept from the gallery. Donna Clifton, who uses a wheelchair and is older than the mostly college-age members of the Occupy group, said she was allowed in the Senate gallery.

Senate Sergeant at Arms Donald Severance told the Miami Herald that the group had been disruptive earlier in the day before the governor's State of the State speech and he didn't want to risk a disturbance.

Chanting Solidary forever, our union makes us strong, and holding signs that proclaimed messages such as Im not a dirty hippie, I have a job and People over Profit, nearly 50 Occupy members greeted those entering the Capitol Tuesday morning. View video.

Members of the group could also be heard from outside the House chamber as Gov. Rick Scott began his State of the State address.

Senate President Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, said he hadnt heard anyone had been barred from the Senate gallery. But he added that anyone watching the session must handle themselves with professionalism."

They also need to know what the rules are, Haridopolos said. The first time they break the rules its probably going to eliminate the opportunity for others who are trying to peacefully protest. Were trying to conduct the business of Florida.

Occupy members said they would return throughout the session.
