Scott Closes State Government on Dec. 23 for Christmas Holiday

Gov. Rick Scott has given state employees an early Christmas gift: a day off.

On the day before a weekend during which Christmas falls, historically, there has been an extremely low business volume, and a large number of state employees take annual leave to be with their families, Scott wrote Friday.

In a letter to Jack Miles, Department of Management Services secretary, Scott noted that employees continue to selflessly serve even though they havent received a cost of living increase in five years.

So to recognize the employees, all state executive buildings will be closed Dec. 23, Scott wrote.

I also note that the Supreme Court of Florida has declared Dec. 23 to be a court holiday, and that both the Florida House of Representatives and the Senate have no business whatsoever scheduled for that date, Scott wrote. Considering the low utilization of state executive buildings on these days, closing these buildings will also result in a savings of utilities and management costs.

I wish you and your family a joyous holiday season.
