Scott Calls for FDLE Investigation into Fatal I-75 Crashes

Gov. Rick Scott has called for the state Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the source of a series of fatal crashes on Interstate 75 near Gainesville late Saturday and early Sunday that left 10 dead and at least 21 injured.

I have asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the circumstances leading up to this incident, Scott stated in a release Monday night.

I will make available any and all resources from the Executive Office of the Governor, as well as any agency under my supervision, as needed. We will also fully cooperate with any federal investigation which may occur. During this tragic time, our thoughts and prayers should be with the victims and their families.

The Florida Forest Service is also investigating the cause of a fire in Paynes Prairie that the Gainesville Sun reported created a wall of smoke and fog that led to the multivehicle crashes.

Forest service spokeswoman Ludie Bond told the Gainesville Sun that investigators have ruled out lightning and prescribed burning as possible starting points for the fire within the natural preserve the highway cuts through.

Attorney General Pam Bondi released the following statement regarding the crash.

I was devastated to learn of the fatal car accidents yesterday. My heart and prayers are with those who lost their lives, those who suffered injuries, and those who are mourning their family members and friends, Bondi stated in a release.

State Rep. Charles Chestnut, D-Gainesville, also released a statement.

"I am deeply saddened by Sunday's tragic and fatal car crashes, Chestnut stated. My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their lives and those who have sustained injuries. I know the citizens of Gainesville and Alachua County share the grief of those who are mourning losses.

"Many area public safety workers, Florida Highway Patrol officers, doctors and nurses, and other residents have participated in the emergency response to these crashes, and I sincerely appreciate their kindnesses and extraordinary service."
