RPOF: Florida Dems Should Cut Partisan Spin on Tuition Bill
In-state tuition for the children of undocumented immigrants passed through the Senate on Thursday, and the Florida Democratic Party was quick to pounce on Gov. Rick Scott and Republican legislators for passing down a "watered-down" bill.
"In order to get this bill passed, Tallahassee Republicans have had to pander to the tea party," said FDP chairwoman Allison Tant. "If Rick Scott and his allies in the Legislature truly believed in helping Floridas Hispanic community, they wouldnt have weakened this bill so much. This bill forces Dreamers to compete for a limited number of slots with out-of-state students. It denies them financial aid."
The Republican Party of Florida shot back at the FDP on Friday, saying the party needed to cut "partisan spinning" on the bill.
"I bet the Florida Democratic Party sure wishes they had a little less talk and a lot more action on tuition from their guy Charlie Crist," wrote Republican Party of Florida press secretary Susan Hepworth. "Turns out the only ACTION he took as governor was to raise tuition on ALL Florida families and fight against in-state tuition breaks for those who have been in Florida for high school, regardless of the choices their parents made. Aside from all of Charlie Crist's TALK today, its Gov. Scott who took ACTION to right Crist's wrong and reverse the tuition and tax hikes on everyone in Florida. CharlieCrist and Florida Democrats should cut the partisan spinning and for once simply praise Gov. Scott for lowering college tuition for all students."
