Ron Paul's Group Supports Florida Congressman's Amendments on Drones and Military Detentions
The Campaign for Liberty, chaired by former presidential candidate and former Congressman Ron Paul, is going to bat for a bill from a Florida Republican.
On Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Trey Radel, R-Fl, sponsored two amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Radels amendments look to stop the federal government from using drones and other forms of lethal military force on American citizens on American soil. Radel had introduced a similar bill earlier in the year. Radel is also seeking to amend the NDAA by having the Defense Department provide a list every year to Congress of US citizens in military detention.
The government should be a vigilant defender of our civil liberties, Radel said on Tuesday. These amendments add yet another layer of protection to the rights of American citizens, granting them the due process they deserve when it comes to the use lethal military force and military detentions.
The amendments are being co-sponsored by some of the leading congressional members of the GOPs libertarian wing including U.S. Rep. Justin Amash of Michigan, U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon of Arizona.
Tim Shoemaker of the Campaign for Liberty, which Ron Paul chairs, expressed his support of Radels legislation, arguing the House will have the opportunity to strengthen civil liberties for all Americans by passing the amendments.
