Ron Paul Wins Straw Poll of Social Conservatives
U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas scored a boost of momentum in his quest for the Republican presidential nomination this weekend when he won the Values Voter Straw Poll today in impressive fashion, running away with the victory with 37 percent of the vote. Businessman Herman Cain placed second in the straw poll of conservative Christians with 23 percent, while former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania came in third with 16 percent.
The rest of the field trailed in single digits. Gov. Rick Perry of Texas and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota garnered 8 percent apiece. Former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts took 4 percent followed by former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich with 3 percent. Former Gov. Jon Huntsman of Utah took less than 1 percent.
Dr. Pauls standing among Christian conservative voters is growing as people become more familiar with the man as well as the message, said Jesse Benton of Pauls team. Dr. Paul is a humble man of faith, who has personally delivered more than 4,000 babies, so hes well acquainted with the sanctity of life. And importantly, he never fails to connect the worthiness of the liberty message he champions with that systems moral superiority over schemes that promote coercive government activism leading to the breakdown of the American family.
