Romney and Santorum Bash Each Other on Economic Issues

On Wednesday night, the two leading candidates for the Republican presidential nomination -- Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum -- exchanged fire on economic matters.

Romney slammed Santorum, insisting that his Republican rival is an economic lightweight who does not understand how the economy works since he has spent his entire career in government.

What the nation wants is someone who understands the economy, not, if you will, an economic lightweight, Romney said. I mean, Senator Santorum is a nice guy but he does not understand how the economy works. He has never had a job in the real economy. You have to understand this economy to be able to fix it.

The Santorum camp fired back on Romney, insisting that his campaign was hitting New York to raise money from Wall Street.

"Mitt Romney proudly supported the Wall Street bailout that rewarded the reckless behavior of Wall Street insiders -- at the expense of the American taxpayer, Hogan Gidley, a spokesman for Santorum, said. Now that his campaign is looking to get some fast cash, he returned to the very people who benefited from the bailout -- that Romney supported."
