Rick Scott Speaks Out on Jesse Jackson's Refusal to Apologize to Floridians
Gov. Rick Scott released a statement on Thursday following Jesse Jacksons refusal to apologize to Floridians after Jackson visited the state earlier in the week to participate in a protest at the Florida Capitol and called Florida the Selma of our time.
Jackson stood by his remarks despite Scott's demand for an apology to all Floridians and instead said he would like to have a private conversation with the governor. Jackson has ignited controversy for his comments about Florida during July where he called the Sunshine State an "apartheid state" and likened Gov. Scott to famous 1960s segregationist George Wallace.
Its disappointing that Jesse Jackson refused to apologize yesterday for his insulting and inflammatory comments about Floridians," said Scott. "Instead, he doubled down on his divisive and reckless remarks. Without an official, public apology from Jesse Jackson to the people of Florida, any conversation would only reward him for making -- and then doubling down -- on his irresponsible insults.
Jackson's comments have been met with backlash from legislators all throughout the state. Rep. Mike Hill, R-Pensacola,called Jackson's commentary a "disgrace."New Florida House Majority Leader Steve Crisafulli, R-Merritt Island, also called for an apology from Jackson.
