Rick Scott Sets Dates for Special Election to Replace Trey Radel
Gov. Rick Scott issued an executive order on Friday calling for a special election to replace former U.S. Rep. Trey Radel, R-Fla. The primary election will be held April 22, and the general election will take place on June 24.
Radel resigned from Congress on Monday after several months of scrutiny after he was arrested in October for misdemeanor possession of cocaine in Washington, D.C. Initially, Radel said he would only take a leave of absence from the House.
Former State Rep. Paige Kreegel and CEO Curt Clawson have already declared they'll be running for the seat. Talk of State Senate Majority Leader Lizbeth Benacquisto running for the seat has been rampant since Radel's resignation. Chauncey Goss's name has also been thrown out as a possible contender in the race to replace Radel.
Former U.S. Rep. Connie Mack IV, who many long contended would run for the seat, announced earlier this week he would not be running.
