Rick Scott Sends Juvenile Justice Chief to Meet with Protesters
Protesters speaking out against the George Zimmerman case are still camped out in front of Gov. Rick Scott's office in Tallahassee, and the governor is sending his juvenile justice secretary, Wansley Walters, to meet with them.Scott met with Walters Monday morning at the DJJ's office in Tallahassee.
The governor had met with the protesters unexpectedly Thursday evening at the Capitol. The protesters are speaking out against Stand Your Ground laws and are requesting a special legislative session to repeal the self-defense laws, but Scott rejected the call for a special session when he met with the protesters. Instead, he advised them to get in touch with the legislators who passed the law in 2005.
"I believe in our Stand Your Ground and our self-defense laws in our state," Scott said. "But I appreciate the fact that they expressed their concerns."
"More than anything, I just want to listen to them, hear their specificconcerns, see what we can do to address them, answer them, follow up on them," said Walters.
The protesters had been camping out at the Capitol over the weekend, sitting in the blistering heat as the air conditioning was turned off on Sunday, which is routine for a weekend in the Capitol.
