Rick Scott Names Rebecca Lipsey to State Board of Education

Gov. Rick Scott announced on Monday that he was naming Rebecca Fishman Lipsey to the Florida Board of Education starting in January 2014. A former public school teacher in New York, Lipsey has been active with Teach For America, leading that group in Miami-Dade.

With an exceptional career in education, Rebecca is committed to student success and accountability, and it is clear she will be a tremendous advocate for all Florida students, Scott said. Rebecca will help continue to ensure we are holding students to high standards in Florida and giving them the support they need to succeed in college and their career.

As a lifelong educator, I am deeply committed to what is best for children and could not be more humbled to bring my experience to the table, Lipsey said. Having worked closely with principals, parents, educators and students from diverse backgrounds, I know that it is possible for all students to succeed.

Lipsey replaces Kathleen Shanahan and will serve from Jan. 1, 2014, until Dec. 31, 2017.
