Rick Scott Maintains Stance on Trayvon Martin Task Force

Gov. Rick Scott maintained his stance Wednesday that the investigation into the Feb. 26 death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford should be completed before a task force gets underway to determine if changes are needed to the states Stand Your Ground law or any other public safety laws.

On Tuesday, Sen. Chris Smith, D-Fort Lauderdale, announced he was starting his own task force to review the Stand Your Ground law since the governors announced plan for a task force is awaiting the outcome of the state investigation.

I dont know why hes doing it, Scott said, speaking on 850 AM WFTL in Fort Lauderdale.

I know were doing the right thing, Scott added. You want to do a thorough investigation. You got to make sure [of] justice for the Trayvon Martin family and justice prevails for George Zimmerman. Once we finish that, then will be the right time to do a thorough investigation of our public safety laws.

Smith told reporters on Tuesday the state needs to act quickly because potential visitors have expressed fear of coming to Florida because of the law that the national media have portrayed as allowing people to shoot first and ask questions later.

Florida is in a crisis mode. We have a big problem in Florida today and its time for leaders to lead and a time for action, Smith said Tuesday.

Smith's task force is set to meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at the main Broward County Library.
