On Tuesday, Gov. Rick Scott presented a Great Floridian award to Brenda Schwarzkopf honoring her late husband Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, best known for his leadership in Desert Storm.

General Schwarzkopf was an American hero who brought his leadership from the battlefield in the Persian Gulf to communities of Florida, fighting against prostate cancer and for children, Scott said. His leadership and determination to remain active after retirement is an inspiration to us all. It is my distinct honor to recognize General Schwarzkopf with the Great Floridian Award.

On Saturday, Scott presented a Great Floridian award to Patrick Smith, the Florida writer best known for his historic novel A Land Remembered.

Patrick Smith touches the hearts of readers with his tale of Floridas history, A Land Remembered. Mr. Smith vibrantly captures the true essence of what makes Florida the best place in the nation our strong families, Scott said. It is an honor to have Floridas history told by such a talented, world-renowned author, and to be able to present him with a Great Floridian award.

It is an honor to receive a Great Floridian award from Governor Scott, Smith said. I am proud to have written about the struggles and successes of Florida and her families.
