Rick Scott Calls for Day of Prayer
Gov. Rick Scott is calling for a statewide day of prayer for unity in Florida on July 21 to reflect on the Trayvon Martin case, which has caused protests not only in Florida but across the nation, as people call for a review of the Sunshine State's Stand Your Ground laws.
"Emotions are running high as we continue to grieve the loss of Trayvon and the toll that the tragic events surrounding his death have taken on the community of Sanford, Fla., and other communities across our state," read the proclamation. "Floridians are unified in not only their resilience, but also in being a people of great humility, kindness, and compassion."
Scott made a last-minute trip to Tallahassee Thursday evening to speak with protesters camping out at his office. Protesters are calling for a special session in the Legislature to discuss Stand Your Ground, racial equality, and the war on youth, but Scott said he will not be calling a special session.
Protesters say they will continue to camp out in front of his office at the Capitol until he calls a special session.
