Rick Perry Tops Mitt Romney to Lead GOP 2012 Field

A national poll released by CBS News and the New York Times over the weekend found Gov. Rick Perry of Texas leading the pack of hopefuls for the Republican presidential nomination with 23 percent. Former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts took second with 19 percent. Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann tied for third with 7 percent. Businessman Herman Cain and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas were knotted together with 5 percent each. Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and former Gov. Jon Huntsman of Utah took 1 percent apiece. The poll of 781 Republicans was taken from Sept. 10-15 and had a margin of error of +/- 4 percent.
