Rev. Jesse Jackson: Boycott Florida as 'Apartheid State'
The Rev. Jesse Jackson has called a boycott of the Sunshine State if the Department of Justice doesn't bring forth a civil rights case against George Zimmerman. Jackson called Florida an "apartheid state" in a CNN interview Thursday. Jackson said President Barack Obama must, at some point, "offer the moral leadership he has to offer."
Trayvon is a symbol of a deeper malady, said Jackson. "No doubt, the inclination is to boycott Florida, stop conventions, to isolate Florida as a kind of apartheid stategiven this whole Stand Your Ground law. Homicides against blacks have tripled since this law has been in existence. More homicides and more guns make us less secure."
Jackson said he believed there would be a civil rights suit brought by the Department of Justice. The NAACP and thousands of petitioners are calling for a new trial to convict George Zimmerman for violating Trayvon Martin's civil rights, but the stakes would be higher for a federal prosecutor, because it would have to be proven that Zimmerman killed Martin because of his race.
