Republicans Fight for More Border Control

Republicans are firing back after the Congressional Budget Office released an analysis saying the current immigration bill would only cut illegal immigration by 25 percent. The Republicans are using this number as leverage tocall for more border security in order to decrease the number of illegal immigrants coming into the U.S.

With the underlying bill you have 7 million more illegals in 10 years, versus without it you have 10 million more, said Sen. John Hoeven, R-North Dakota. So youre not doing enough to secure the border.

The recent numbers from the CBO's analysis may have given the GOP the upper hand to negotiate for further border control, an issue many Republicans feel needs solving to crack down on illegal immigration.

The border was only going to be 25 percent more secure with the bill as it was. So thats been incredibly helpful to us last night and this morning, explained Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tennessee.

The Gang of Eight is currently working on an an overhaul to reform the current immigration system. Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, who is a member of the Gang of Eight, explained the Republicans didn't want to ostracize the Democrats too much in the fight for border control.

We do have some significant agreement with the Democrats that we hope to be able to do with our Republican friends, McCain said. Theres always been two major issues: border and benefits, border and benefits.

The CBO's analysis showed the immigration bill would cut the federal deficit by $175 billion in the next decade. The bill would also boost the U.S. population by 10 million people by 2023.
