Rep. Soto Reflects on Puerto Rico Day
As the Capitol celebrates its day to honor Puerto Rico, Rep. Darren Soto, D-Orlando, has been on center stage, celebrating his heritage and the many links between the island and the Sunshine State.
Puerto Rico has deep roots in the state, said Soto, pointing out that Ponce de Leon, the Spanish explorer who discovered Florida, was also the first governor of Puerto Rico.
Weve seen the increased influence of the Puerto Rican community in Florida, he said, pointing out that Puerto Rican voters in central Florida are some of the most critical swing voters in the state and nation. Soto said they backed President Obama in 2008 but they have also supported other Democrats like Alex Sink and Republicans including Charlie Crist, George W. Bush and Jeb Bush.
