Rep. Ryan Winkler Calls Clarence Thomas 'Uncle Tom' on Twitter

Rep. Ryan Winkler, D-Minn., faced heavy criticism on Tuesday after a questionable and racially-charged tweet about the Supreme Court's decision on the Voting Rights Act went out on his Twitter account.

The tweet read: "#SCOTUS VRA majority is four accomplices to race discrimination and one Uncle Thomas. Marriage decision may blur Court's backsliding."

Twitter erupted after Winkler sent out the tweet calling Justice Clarence Thomas, a black Republican, "Uncle Thomas." The tweet was later deleted. Winkler then issued an apology for sending out the tweet, saying he "didn't understand 'Uncle Tom' as a racist term."
