Randall Terry, TV Star?
Best known to Floridians for his primary challenge to the late Sen. Jim King and his role as a spokesman for Terri Schiavo's parents, Randall Terry, the founder of Operation Rescue and now with the Society for Truth and Justice, is back with his own television show.
In Randall Terry: The Voice of Resistance, Terry offers a mix of entertainment and commentary on the news of the day.
I'm a little suspicious of efforts to take on Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart. The "1/2 Hour News Hour" on Fox News was as painful as someone taking my upper lip and pulling it over my head. Over at SNL, there have been a few-flops. Colin Quinn ring a bell?
Terry plays the piano and sings songs (quite well, actually) and even dresses up and plays characters from pirate Captain Scurvy to jailed mob boss Joey the Hammer. Terry even offers a word at the end of the show but, while Stephen Colbert uses his word segment to make a joke, Terry uses his to make a point. Terry is not subtle and never has been, but he is interesting and often entertaining.
The show is not for everyone. Liberals will not like Terrys opposition to abortion and defense of traditional marriage. Republicans will not like how Terry takes shots at them -- even offering to donate his spine to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. He does offer some surprises. Unlike some conservatives, he was appalled when police tasered a 17-year-old who ran on the field during a Phillies game.
Terry is a natural in front of the camera. Unlike so many figures in politics, he is able to laugh at himself, and that helps propel the show along. Terry may be very serious about what he believes, but he is not always so serious about himself.
The show, which made its debut on Monday, can be seen through the Conservative Political Network. The show comes on at 6 p.m. weekdays on WQXT in St. Augustine and WCKV in Tennessee. Terry said that other networks, including stations in New York and Los Angeles, were considering picking it up.
Theres no show like this, said Terry. People are giving the show rave reviews.
