Former Broward Teachers Union President Patrick Santeramo was arrested Tuesday and charged with 20 counts of racketeering, theft and money-laundering between October 2007 and September 2010.
According to the Broward and Palm Beach New Times, Santeramo allegedly embezzled BTU funds to reimburse union members and staff for $25,000 in campaign contributions they made to both the presidential campaign of Hillary Clinton and the gubernatorial campaign of Alex Sink.
Prosecutors say Santeramo told a team of 25 people to contribute funds to the Democratic campaigns and that "they and their family members would be reimbursed for these political contributions."
If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 200 years.
