Proctor Stresses Need to Strike a Balance in University Reform
House Education Committee Chairman Rep. Bill Proctor, R-St. Augustine, released the following statement Thursday, following the conclusion of the third day of testimony from the presidents of the states universities.
Over the past week, we have gained valuable insight from the leaders of our 11 public universities regarding their strengths as individual institutions and as units of the state university system. What they have provided will be invaluable in shaping recommendations for the future of our public higher education system.
What is clear is that Floridas universities reject a 'one size fits all' approach that restricts growth and stifles innovation. Some universities are looking for autonomy to set tuition rates while others are seeking more support for programs that equip students for success in the global economy. Any future reforms must strike the right balance between moving Floridas entire university system forward and allowing each institution to fulfill its individual mission.
We are beginning to sift through the tremendous amount of information provided to the committee. I look forward to reviewing the ideas presented by our university presidents and continuing our meaningful discussion on higher education reform.
