President George H.W. Bush Celebrates 89th Birthday

June 12 marks the 89th birthday of President George H.W. Bush, who served as the country's 41st President from 1989-1993. Prior to his presidency, he served as Vice President under former President Ronald Reagan.

Bush was born June 12, 1924 in Milton, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the armed forces during World War II and became the youngest pilot in the Navy. During his time in the Navy, Bush flew in 58 combat missions. After WWII, the former President attended Yale University, where he enrolled in a special accelerated program that allowed him to finish his schooling in just two and a half years. He later embarked on a career in the oil industry in West Texas.

Bush's political career was lengthy. On top of his presidency and vice presidency, he was also a Congressman and an ambassador and Director of Central Intelligence. He is the oldest surviving former President and Vice President.

Bush never lost an election when his name appeared on the Florida ballot. He and Reagan won Florida in both the 1980 and 1984 elections, and Bush carried the state in 1988 against Dukakis and even in 1992 when he lost to former President Bill Clinton.

Next to Texas, Florida has a special place in Bush's heart. His mother Dorothy Bush lived on Jupiter Island for years and his son Jeb Bush was the governor of Florida from 1998 to 2006.
