Poll: Floridians Oppose Planned Parenthood Funding by Federal Government

While Congress endlessly debates funding for Planned Parenthood, the issue is a no-brainer for older male Floridians, who just say no.

A new poll shows a majority of likely voters in Florida support efforts to cut all federal funding for Planned Parenthood, the nation's leading abortion provider.

Viewpoint Florida found that 54 percent of respondents want subsidies stopped while 38 percent oppose a cutoff.

Opinions split by age and gender, however. Among voters aged 18-34, 54 percent oppose a cutoff while just 33 percent of voters over age 65 oppose defunding.

Two out of three male voters said they would support defunding Planned Parenthood, while women are split. A razor-thin plurality of 45 percent support a cutoff and 43 percent oppose; 12 percent of women said they were unsure.

Independent voters are also closely divided. They oppose ending funding by a 48-46 margin. Democrats strongly support continued funding while Republicans are heavily opposed.

Geographically, all four regions of Florida supported revocation of funding. Voters in the Panhandle and Jacksonville areas are more likely to support defunding Planned Parenthood, while the Tampa/Gulf Coast region was the most divided, with 50 percent supporting the defunding measure to 44 percent opposed.

The study was conducted April 13-14 among 807 Florida registered voters likely to vote in the 2012 general election. The margin of error was +/- 3.5 percent.

Roughly 25 percent of federal "women's health" Title 10 funds go to Planned Parenthood. One-third of the organization's annual $1.1 billion budget comes from the taxpayers.
