Perry Thurston Admits to Living In His District 'When he Wants to'
Florida House Democratic Leader Perry Thurston was found living outside of his district by news channel Local 10 in a new video highlighting legislators who aren't residing in their own districts.
In the video, Thurston appears to be avoiding the camera. When asked if he lived in the house, which is outside his district, Thurston replied, "When I want to."
The video investigates several legislators who are apparently living outside of the districts they serve, which violates the Florida Constitution.
Rep. Hazelle Rogers, D-Lauderdale Lakes, maintained that she lived in a small condominium but has a house with her family outside of her district.
"Honestly, I live in my condo," she said. "My husband follows me whenever he feels like it."
But the video shows Local 10 reporters showing up to the condo and finding that nobody was home. The reporter then headed to Rogers' home, where she was spotted with her family.
"You can find me here because this is my husband's property," she said.
Rogers and Thurston are just a few legislators who have recently come under fire for living outside their districts. Sen. Maria Sachs, D-Delray Beach, was seen staying at her $1.5 million house in Boca Raton, which is outside her district.
Gov. Rick Scott and Sen. Jack Latvala, chairman of the Florida Senate Ethics Committee, have both vowed to tighten state law, but it appears that hasn't stopped legislators from living outside their districts.
