Pam Bondi: Settlement Reached in Skechers 'Toning' Claims

Purchasers of certain Skechers Resistance Running athletic shoes may be in line for a refund as part of a $45 million settlement between Florida, 42 other states, the Federal Trade Commission and the maker of the footwear, Skechers USA Inc.

Attorney General Pam Bondis office reported Wednesday on the settlement that resolves health-related claimsthe company made in marketing its line of rocker-bottom shoes.

Companies are expected to do their due diligence before making claims about their products, Bondi stated in a release. This case is an excellent example of state and federal authorities working together to protect consumers.

Consumers had alleged in a class action lawsuit that the companys toning footwear -- Shape-ups, Tone-ups, Skechers Resistance Runner, and Shape-ups Toners -- was falsely advertised to improve posture, promote weight loss, strengthen the back, improve blood circulation, promote sleep, reduce stress, reduce physical stress on knees, legs and ankle joints, and burn calories.
