Obama Promises Immigration Reform 'Soon' to Hispanics on Telemundo, Univision
President Barack Obama, the ever-present campaigner, took his push for immigration reform to the Hispanic audiences of Telemundo and Univison Thursday night.
He told the target audience that immigration reform would be coming "soon," in a clear move to bolster his legacy.
Obama said Republicans and Democrats working on the bipartisan legislation are coming together in a spirit of compromise, which could make it ultimately pass. But, if not, the president said he has his own bill ready to go. The first bill, from the Gang of 8 that includes Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, could land on the Senate floor in April.
Immigration reform could indeed pass if leading political minds show any trend. Last week, for instance, even tea party favorite, Sen. Rand Paul, of Kentucky, made a swift turnaroundon his immigration stance. In two short years, he went from proposing a constitutional amendment that would have stripped children of illegal immigrants from birthright citizenship to sanctioning a pathway for illegal immigrants to be granted legal status in the U.S.
With the power of the Hispanic electorate, this could be the year the heavy lift gets done.
