Obama Finally Approves Florida Disaster Relief from August Storm

A month after the federal government rejected Floridas request for disaster assistance after Hurricane Isaac, the White House has reversed itself.

Gov. Rick Scott announced Friday that Florida has received a Presidential Declaration to assist the 11 counties -- Bay, Collier, Escambia, Franklin, Gulf, Martin, Monroe, Okaloosa, Palm Beach, St. Lucie and Santa Rosa -- impacted by the storm in August.

We are pleased that FEMA recognized the legitimacy of our request and granted assistance for Florida's communities impacted by Hurricane Isaac, Scott stated in a release.

I saw firsthand the impacts Isaac had to our state. This assistance will allow Floridas communities to successfully recover from those impacts, and keep Florida the best state in the nation to work, live and play.

Scott had appealed the September ruling by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Scott had declared a statewide state of emergency on Aug. 25 for the storm, which after sweeping across Florida made landfall south of New Orleans on Aug. 28.

Florida officials have estimated the damage from the storm, mostly from flooding and tornadoes, at $48.4 million.
