Obama Announces the Death of Osama bin Laden
President Barack Obama addressed the nation very late on Sunday to announce that Osama bin Laden, the architect of the 9/11 attacks, has been killed.
The United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, said Obama, who offered reflections on the 9/11 attacks and the aftermath including the continued war on terror.
Obama said he made taking out bin Laden, who was hiding in a compound in Pakistan, a priority very early in his presidency. A small team of Americans carried out that operation, said Obama who added that none of the American operatives was killed -- and, after a firefight, they killed him and secured his body.
Noting that the war on terror continues, Obama called the death of bin Laden the biggest victory in the war.
