Oba Chandler Claims Innocence Prior to Death

Oba Chandler, convicted of the triple murder of an Ohio woman and her two daughters vacationing in Tampa in 1989, was put to death by lethal injections just after 4 p.m. at Florida State Prison in Raiford on Tuesday.

Though Chandler had nothing to say to witnesses before he was executed, he did leave a written statement behind, the Tampa Tribune reported.

"Oba Chandler last statement. You are killing a innocent man today."

Gov. Rick Scott signed the death warrant for Chandler, 65, last month.

Chandler was convicted and sentenced to die in 1994 for the 1989 murders of Joan Rogers, 36, and her two daughters, Michelle, 17, and Christe, 14.

The tied bodies of all three women were found in Tampa Bay, and a cinder block was tied by a rope around their necks. Medical examiners determined the cause of death of all three women to be asphyxiation from the ropes around their necks or from drowning.

Rogers car was found abandoned beside a boat ramp off the Courtney Campbell Causeway. Inside the car, police found a brochure with directions on it, parts of which were written in Oba Chandlers handwriting. Chandlers fingerprints were also lifted from the brochure.
