Newt Gingrich Tries to Stop the Bleeding by Focusing on Health-Care Repeal
With his presidential campaign taking hits on all sides from a series of gaffes -- including his attack on the budget proposed by U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis. -- former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich tried to change the conversation on Tuesday and Wednesday by attacking the federal health-care law backed by President Barack Obama.
Gingrich noted in an e-mail to supporters sent out on Wednesday morning that he had signed a pledge in Iowa to repeal the health-care law.
Obamacare is such a massive and complex power grab of a law that there are countless specific reasons to oppose the law, wrote Gingrich. Its unconstitutional. Period.
If the federal government can force us to buy health insurance, what is stopping it from forcing us to buy other products? asked Gingrich. This is why dozens of state attorneys general have filed suit against Obamacare, charging that the individual mandate is unconstitutional.
Gingrich called for the implementation of free-market solutions to replace Obamas law.
With conservatives hammering the former congressional leader for attacking Ryans budget -- which Gingrich apologized for on Tuesday -- it looks like Newt is trying to stop the bleeding. The team over at MSNBCs First Thoughts show what is at stake for Gingrich and why his presidential campaign is in serious trouble.
