Newt Gingrich Doubles Down on Delaware
With only 17 delegates to the Republican convention in Tampa come August, Delaware is the smallest prize on the table on Tuesday when five states in the Northeast -- the others are Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island -- hold presidential primaries. But the Blue Hen State may host the most important of those five contests.
Newt Gingrich has aggressively focused on Delaware and, on Monday, national media outlets reported that the former congressional leader could end his presidential bid if he does not do well there -- which would leave Ron Paul as the only challenger besides Mitt Romney, the overwhelming favorite for the Republican nomination.
Gingrich has been going all out in Delaware in recent days, reeling in endorsements from GOP leaders in the state including Terry Spence who had been speaker of the states House and party officials.
With only two wins under his belt -- South Carolina and his home state of Georgia -- even a strong showing in Delaware will not help Gingrich too much in slowing down Romney. If he does stay in the race, look for Gingrich to target North Carolina which holds its primary on May 8.
