New Poll Throws Cold Water on Romney-Santorum Ticket Talk

Most presidential nominees do not choose one of the candidates they defeated in the primary for the vice presidential spot on the ticket, though there have been exceptions: some successful like Ronald Reagan/George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama/Joe Biden and some unsuccessful like John Kerry/John Edwards.

A poll of likely voters unveiled by Rasmussen Reports on Wednesday finds that less than a quarter of those surveyed -- 22 percent -- think that whoever emerges with the Republican nomination should tap one of his GOP rivals for the vice presidency, while 37 percent do not thinkthat should be the case and 41 percent are undecided.

Its hard to imagine Mitt Romney or Rick Santorum choosing the other after some of the attacks; the same holds true for Romney selecting Newt Gingrich. Still, Bush did famously dismiss Reagans ideas as voodoo economics and stayed eight years by the Gippers side.

The poll of 1,000 likely voters was taken March 17-18 and had a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.
