New House GOP Leader Carlos Lopez-Cantera Cheers Special Session
House Majority Leader Carlos Lopez-Cantera, R-Miami, offered his take on the special session held on Tuesday -- and praised the new leadership but also the bipartisan effort that led to overriding eight vetoes that lame-duck Gov. Charlie Crist issued earlier in the year.
Today we accomplished our duty to override a number of the governors poor decisions and were able to provide much-needed relief to thousands of burdened Floridians, said Lopez-Cantera. We addressed issues that were already vetted and passed in the previous legislative session. Many issues received unanimous bipartisan support for a second time. These issues were good policy when they originally passed the Legislature, and they are good policy today. I am thankful that we can now move on to other pressing state business.
He added, This special session has shown the strong leadership of the Republican Party, and I look forward to leading our caucus in the upcoming session. Of particular note was the overriding of the health care appropriations Shands veto. A line-item veto override has not occurred since Dec. 7, 1984.
