National Unemployment Mark Down, Discouraged Job Seekers Grow
The nations unemployment mark stood at 8.1 percent in April, little changed from March, the U.S. Department of Labor announced Friday.
Employers added about 115,000 jobs in April, putting the number of out of work at 12.5 million, according to the federal release.
The number fails to highlight an increase in those who no longer believe work is out there that fits them.
In addition to those officially out of work, another 2.4 million people were listed as marginally attached to the labor force, as they had not searched for work in the four weeks prior to the survey.
Among that group, 968,000 were listed as discouraged -- 12 percent more than a month earlier -- because they believe no jobs are available for them.
The other 1.4 million marginally attached were attending school or family responsibilities during the prior four weeks.
Overall, the federal release showed job growth in professional and business services, retail trade and health care. Transportation and warehousing lost jobs over the month
Government jobs were cut by 15,000 in the month.
The April numbers for Florida will be released later this month.
For March, the states unemployment mark stood at 9 percent, representing 836,000 Floridians listed as jobless.
