More Celebrities Boycotting Florida
More celebrities are joining musician Stevie Wonder in boycotting Florida after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin, according to news reports. Several high-profile celebrities have reportedly joined Wonder in boycotting Florida, including Jay-Z, Kanye West and Madonna.
Wonder declared on Sunday that he would not be performing in Florida until the Stand Your Ground law was abolished. Other celebrities are reportedly joining in on the boycott and will not perform in the Sunshine State until the law, which was not invoked in the George Zimmerman trial, is abolished.
"I decided today that until the Stand Your Ground law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again," Wonder said during a concert in Canada earlier this month. "As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world."
Jay-Z and his wife, Beyonce, showed their support for Trayvon Martin's family at a vigil in New York City on Saturday. According to April Ryan of American Urban Radio Network, celebrities like Rihanna, the Rolling Stones, Usher, Alicia Keys, will.i.am and Rod Stewart have all joined the boycott list. According to Ryan's report, some artists have already canceled some shows in the Sunshine State.
UPDATE:Representatives for a number of artists on the list of purported list of musicians and performers boycotting the state of Florida in the wake of the George Zimmerman verdict said Tuesday that their clients have never heard of nor have they been contacted by the list. MotherJones received word that the Rolling Stones, who were listed as a group who is boycotting Florida, had never even heard of the list.
