Mitt Romney's Team Turns Fire Back to Newt Gingrich in Ohio

While their fire has been directed against Rick Santorum in recent days, the team behind Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has not forgotten about GOP rival Newt Gingrich. On Tuesday, the Romney camp ripped into Gingrich, reminding voters about the former House speakers career after stepping down from Congress.

As Newt Gingrich visits Ohio, he still has questions he needs to answer about his work for the lobbyists at Freddie Mac, Ryan Williams, a spokesman for Romney, said on Tuesday. Ohioans have suffered during the housing crisis, while Speaker Gingrich was using his influence and connections to promote Freddie Macs agenda in Washington. Speaker Gingrich likes to compare himself to the Wright Brothers, but its become increasingly clear that his vision for America isnt taking flight with conservative primary voters.

In the meantime, Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman for Romney, was also roasting Gingrich.

It appears that Newt Gingrichs career as a nonlobbyist spread beyond his K Street office -- including his former home state of Georgia, Saul insisted on Tuesday. Reports indicate Speaker Gingrich may have even run afoul of Georgias lobbying disclosure requirements. The devil is in the details, and the details suggest that Newt was lobbying for a whole host of clients, despite his claims to the contrary.

Santorum might have a big night on Tuesday as polls show him leading in Minnesota and Missouri, both of which have primaries on that day -- but its clear that the Romney team has not forgotten about Gingrich.
