Mike Huckabee Weighs In on Federal Debt Ceiling

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who may be gearing up for another shot at the Republican presidential nomination, weighed in on Tuesday on the debt ceiling.

If you only read the news from Washington, you may think that the economy is truly getting better. The media seem only to focus on the number of new workers added to the work force, while ignoring the fact that the national unemployment rate actually increased to 9 percent. But there is a story even more significant than that -- and it's being virtually ignored by the media, noted Huckabee. Theres trouble on the tracks ahead -- and how we handle it will determine the future for generations of Americans. The trouble is the unsustainable deficit that our country must deal with. Everyone in Washington sees the trouble coming down the tracks. But, sadly, most in Washington continue to ignore it.

We're bumping up against the $14.3 trillion debt-ceiling limit that was supposed to hold us until May 31st. Imagine running your household where your only hope of avoiding disaster was to beg your creditors to raise your credit limit every few months. Thats no way to run a household and thats no way to run a country, continued Huckabee. But, that's exactly what the federal government is doing. And every few months Washington trots out the experts who tell us all how irresponsible it would be if Congress didn't increase the debt ceiling. Tim Geithner and his crowd then tell us of all the terrible things that will happen to our economy if we don't bite the bullet and increase the debt ceiling once again.

Huckabee also mulled over spending plans coming out of Washington.

They talk about spending cuts, but no one wants to make the significant ones that can actually impact the deficit. Even the Ryan plan, which is the first serious proposal dealing with the deficit to come out of Washington in years, doesn't get us out of debt. However, now Speaker Boehner is stipulating that in return for once again increasing the debt ceiling, new spending cuts must be in the trillions, not mere billions -- perhaps that will get us back on the right path, noted Huckabee. In the end, the American people will have to make some tough decisions in the near future -- and hopefully vote out of office in 2012 all the reckless spenders who want to ignore the trouble on the tracks ahead.
