Michele Bachmann Team Takes Aim at Rick Perry
Supporters of U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota are looking to rally conservatives behind their candidate by launching a quick strike against a candidate who has not officially entered the race for the Republican presidential nomination.
With Texas Gov. Rick Perry expected to enter the race for the Republican presidential nomination on Saturday, Bachmann supporters formed a super PAC and took aim at the governor of the Lone Star State. Bachmann has been moving up in the polls during the summer and is expected to be one of the leading candidates in the Iowa straw poll held in Ames on Saturday.
The new organization, Keep Conservatives United, fired away at Perry, referring to him as a spoiler who will help ensure the nomination of former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, who is currently the front-runner for the Republican nomination.
As a spoiler, Perry can allow Romney to beat a divided conservative field and present a mixed message of support for government-run health care against Obama, the new group insisted on its website. KeepConservativesUnited.com will stop Rick Perry from dividing conservatives by exposing his record, beginning with a web ad about Perry attacking George Bush for big spending as governor of Texas while Perry actually spent more than Bush as governor.
Besides hammering Perry for bashing George W. Bush, the ad defended Bachmann as an honest conservative, attempting to contrast her with the governor of the Lone Star State.
The new organization has some impressive names behind it -- including veteran Republican activists Bob Harris and Luther Snyder.
