Michele Bachmann Just Says No; Allen West Ready to Fight
A small but significant cadre of Republicans voted against the one-week spending patch that averted a government shutdown late Friday night.
One of the chief opponents was Rep. Michele Bachmann, a tea party darling and rising leader in the GOP conservative wing.
The deal that was reached tonight is a disappointment for me and for millions of Americans who expected $100 billion in cuts, who wanted to make sure their tax dollars stopped flowing to the nations largest abortion provider, and who wanted us to defund ObamaCare," the Minnesota Republican said Friday night.
"Instead, weve been asked to settle for $39 billion in cuts, even as we continue to fund Planned Parenthood and the implementation of ObamaCare. Sadly, were missing the mandate given us by voters last November, and for that reason I voted against the Continuing Resolution.
After tweeting earlier in the day that Republicans should put off the abortion battle for another day, Bachmann's bottom line remained money -- and the $39 billion cut just wasn't enough.
Rep. Allen West, R-Fort Lauderdale, joined fellow Florida Republicans in supporting the continuing resolution, but he told The Hill he would vote against the overall budget deal when it comes up next week.
West -- like Sarah Palin, Bachmann and other new Turks in the GOP -- expressed deep dissatisfaction with the puny size of the cuts so far. They also remain adamantly opposed to funding Planning Parenthood, the nation's No. 1 abortion provider.
The way things are shaping up, next week's debate could be a lot more evenly split than the House's 348-70 tally appeared Friday night.
Stay tuned to the polls. In the end, they drive everything.
