Meek Demands Crist Veto Ultrasound Measure
Calling it a mean-spirited measure and a draconian bill, Congressman Kendrick Meek called on Gov. Charlie Crist to veto HB 1143, the measure the Legislature passed requiring a woman considering an abortion to have an ultrasound. With Meek the leading Democrat in the primary field for the U.S. Senate, he may well face independent candidate Crist along with Republican Marco Rubio in Novembers general election.
"Gov. Crist is already late in speaking out forcefully against this horrendous bill, said Meek. But his near complete silence makes any potential veto a decision driven by politics, not personal conviction.
Trailing Rubio and Crist in the polls and rumors continuing to fly that Democrats will abandon his campaign to back the governor, Meek said he backed President Barack Obamas nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court -- and wondered if Crist would do the same.
"Gov. Crist and Speaker Rubio stood together to oppose Justice Sonia Sotomayor, said Meek. Will they stand together again in opposing Solicitor General Elena Kagan's nomination?"
