Medical Marijuana Opponents Start Pushing Back Against Amendment 2

Opponents of medical marijuana stepped up their efforts in the Sunshine State on Tuesday with Dont Let Florida Go to Pot doubling down on their opposition to Amendment 2. The group intends to launch a campaign shining a light on the proposed amendment.

The legalization of marijuana in Florida is a very important issue to Floridas law enforcement, and the Florida Sheriffs Association supports the efforts of the Dont Let Florida Go to Pot coalition, said Steve Casey, the executive director of the Florida Sheriffs Association, on Tuesday. Educating our citizens to the dangers of illegal drugs such as marijuana is a high priority.

The group spelled out its opposition to Amendment 2, arguing it does not have age restrictions and young Floridians will have access without parental consent; pointing to caregivers included in the amendment not being forced to have background checks or training; and insisting the proposal will lead to a return of pill mills and prescription drug abuse.

Amendment 2 is a misleading, well-thought-out fraud, said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. The amendment does not require a doctors prescription, rather only a recommendation. There is a loophole big enough to float a battleship through that will allow anyone in Florida to obtain pot for any reason -- making it nearly impossible for law enforcement to hold dealers and pot shop doctors accountable.
