Matt Gaetz Files Bill for Later High School Start Times
Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach, will try to make sure high schoolers can get a little more sleep in the mornings with his new legislation.
On Monday, Gaetz filed a bill (HB 67) for the 2014 legislative session that would essentially prohibit school boards from starting high school classes any earlier than 8 a.m.
Some schools in places like Gaetz's home, Fort Walton Beach, have early start times. Fort Walton Beach High School starts its classes at 7 a.m., according to the school's website. Gaetz believes that the bill will give teenagers a little more sleep in the mornings, something that is now impossible if students have to start school too early. Gaetz believes the extra shut-eye will make teens more alert and promote a healthier lifestyle.
