Massachusetts Mayor Heads Down the Michael 'Nanny' Bloomberg Trail

No, no, Henrietta, don't do it.

You represent Cambridge, Miz Mayor -- the "Cradle of Liberty," remember?

It's doubtful Henrietta Davis will pay the slightest attention. This nannyistic mayor of Cambridge, Mass., is taking her inspiration from the controversial New York City proposal to ban large, sugary soft drinks. In fact, she told the City Council earlier in the week she wants to go a step further than Mayor Michael Bloomberg did. She wants to ban free refills, too.

Our environment is full of way too many temptations, Davis told CNN. This is one temptation that isnt really necessary.

Incidentally, Cambridge, part of the Boston area, is home to Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Try to picture, if you will, the happy faces at Fire and Ice, Cambridge's top student hangout, when they find out the Coke they just paid $1.99 for no longer includes free refills.

Then imagine how impressed they'll be to learn it's because their mayor is saving them from obesity and diabetes.

In this city where John Adams' free-market principles once flourished, students have no alternative but to hold out for a saner point of view from the citys Public Health Department, where Davis' proposal goes next.
