Marco Rubio: We Need To Restructure Foreign Aid and Relationship With Egypt

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.. has introduced an amendment to a Senate transportation funding bill that would essentially end military aid to Egypt, and other members of the Senate are speaking out. Paul's amendment would redirect the money to domestic infrastructure projects rather than providing it to Egypt, which has been mired with controversy and unrest since the overthrow of democratically-elected leader Mohamed Morsi earlier this month.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., took to the Senate floor on Wednesday, saying that foreign aid should not be canceled, but restructured.Rubio called the elimination of aid a "mistake."

"If you eliminate aid completely, you lose leverage. They're still going to buy weapons. They just won't get them from us, and our influence will be diminished."

Rubio called the crisis in Egypt a "unique opportunity" to reframe the relationship between the U.S. and Egypt, explaining that if Egypt moved toward certain goals in the interest of the U.S., the Middle Eastern country would continue to receive aid.
