LeMieux Drills BP's Cap

Attorney General Bill McCollum said at the Cabinet meeting earlier this week that it was the governments job to hold BPs feet to the fire -- and now he is getting support from a fellow Florida Repubican at the federal level.

U.S. Senator George LeMieux has backed the Oil Spill Response and Assistance Act (ORSA) to raise the amount oil companies are liable for when there are spills like the recent one in the Gulf.

BP is already responsible of the costs of the cleanup, but we must ensure taxpayers are not forced to pay for associated damages, said LeMieux. It is clear that the economic damage done to the Gulf Coast will far exceed the $75 million cap currently in place.

The measure LeMieux is backing also says a report on the Deepwater Horizon incident has to be handed to Congress before Sept. 1.
