Legislature Will Once Again Grapple With Texting While Driving

Rep. Ari Porth, D-Coral Springs, is going to be returning to an issue the Legislature examined in 2010 -- texting while driving.

Porth is sponsoring a bill that will ban texting while driving and will add points to a drivers license for those who are convicted.

Its time that parents make the same commitment to stop texting while driving, Porth said on Wednesday. I implore all Florida drivers to cease texting while driving because distracted driving at any age puts all Floridians in danger.

Porth announced that he was getting the backing of business leaders, such as CEO Mike Jackson of AutoNation, as well as law enforcement officials.

Distracted driving, which incorporates text messaging while driving, is an epidemic causing unnecessary property damage, injuries and deaths throughout the state of Florida, said Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti whose office will be joining AutoNation in running a campaign warning of the dangers of texting while driving.
